11/14/2023 0 Comments State of survival discord![]() ![]() Grenville Astill identifies two interpretations of English rural settlement between the seventh and the thirteenth centuries a short-term chronology, with the ninth-century burhs as an articulation of market economy as much as defensive exercise and a long-term one, in which Astill argues for a redistributive rather than market economy, with important regional differences in land use and settlement from the eighth century onwards. ![]() Following an appreciation of Dyer's work (with bibliography), the first of three groups of papers looks at questions over long timespans and from a general perspective. Its fifteen essays reflect both the themes he has pursued and the way in which he has combined archaeological and detailed historical research, especially in the local archives. The breadth, originality and influence of Christopher Dyer's contribution to the social and economic history of medieval England are well recognised in this Festschrift published to mark his sixty-fifth birthday. ![]()
